Ernie walked into the study hall and found Shelby and Mike already sitting at their table. He had snuck a peek at his phone and saw the text from his sister relaying Maddie’s idea. He shook his head and made a face when he saw who had come up with it, but he had to admit it was a good idea.

Shelby was already concentrating on her literature notes, and Mike was reaching for his I Pad as Ernie reached his seat. The bell screeched loudly.

“Again, before the bell, dude. Getting better by the day,” Shelby snipped without looking up from her notebook.

“Hah-har. Yes, I am.” Ernie answered.

“So, bruh, how’s the aunt thing coming?” Mike asked in a hushed voice.

“What do you mean? We got the information you needed. Should be easier this time because, let’s face it, the lady wants to be found out. Not a lot of detective work.” Shelby observed, still engrossed in her notes.

“Well, you don’t know how stubborn the women in my life can be.”

“If Z is anything like the others, we’re in for a treat, then,” Mike muttered.

So, Ernie filled his friends in on not only his mother’s obvious warning, but also Maddie’s idea.

“You have a warped way of looking at punishment, Mike,” Shelby muttered under her breath, turning the page of her notebook.

“Here’s the deal. We have to arrange this meeting with Hadley but not tick off Momma. How in the world can we do that?” Ernie presented.

“Just one question,” Shelby asked, closing her notebook. “Is it worth you getting into more trouble than you’ve ever been in, ever, for this?”

Ernie quietly thought for only a second and looked at Shelby.

“Yes. If Auntie Cordelia goes back to being the cheerful person she used to be, then yes. No one should live as long as she has and be as sad as she is right now. We need to give her back her happiness.”

Shelby and Mike looked at each other; neither said anything for a beat or two.

“I don’t see my grandma as much as I want to. But when I do, she gets happy, which makes me happier. I’d hate to think she’s bummed and sad because that’d make me bummed,” Mike confessed.

“My grandma and her sister live together. If they got separated at this stage of the game, I don’t even want to think how sad they’d be,” Shelby acknowledged.

“Bruh, we can’t let your aunt stay sad and maybe move away. I’ll help,” Mike offered.

“Fine, me too. Your aunt sounds like a cool lady anyway,” Shelby gave in.

“Only one question. How do we not make your mom mad so we can have the cookies?” Mike honestly asked.

Shelby blew out a breath loud enough to make Ernie chuckle. His laugh garnered Mr.
